Hubert Renovates Historic MD Barn for Art Gallery
Gaithersburg, Maryland, August 18, 2005…Hubert Construction of Gaithersburg, MD has renovated a historically designated barn in Potomac, MD to serve as gallery and office space for Artists Circle, Ltd. The project was completed in July 2005 at a total contract cost of $305,000.
- Hubert modernized about one third of the barn’s total space (1,600 square feet) by building a two–story enclosed and conditioned space within the barn’s original walls. Using steel angles and brackets as a means of support, “floating walls” were built to enhance the original structure. These “floating walls” stand free of the original walls and thus leave all the original timbers visible. Within the barn, a glass storefront separates the conditioned space from the original barn, providing views of the original barn’s interior.
- The new two–story gallery and office space has a catwalk–style second floor that permits views of the entire space from either floor. The first floor has gallery walls ascending to a 23–foot–high atrium ceiling. From the second floor, people can look down into the first floor office space on either side of the walkway. Morgan Gick McBeath and Associates of Falls Church, VA was the project architect.
- Since the building was constructed in 1878 and is on the Montgomery County Historic Register, which prohibits any alteration of the façade or roof, Hubert faced a technical challenge in weatherproofing the interior space. To solve this problem, Hubert drilled “weep holes” all along the barn’s perimeter to allow any possible water penetration to drip down between the original exterior wall and the new interior wall. This solution keeps all moisture away from the new conditioned space.
- Artists Circle assists corporate and institutional clients with artwork acquisition, transport, and installation, as well as collection management, framing, signage, and other services. The renovated barn’s owner is Jack Devine, a partner in Artists Circle along with Sharon Buchanan.
